At Penmount Crematorium, we take great pride in our facilities and the high standards of care we offer to those who are bereaved.
On the day of a funeral, or when visiting a loved one’s resting place, families and visitors usually see our well-kept grounds and gardens, the chapel, or the natural burial ground. But our care goes beyond these public areas. It includes the behind-the-scenes work of the crematorium, which most people do not see.
After the service
After the curtains close and mourners leave the chapel, the coffin is respectfully moved to the crematory. At this point, the nameplate is checked against the details on the authority card. This card stays with the deceased throughout the process. Once all checks are complete, the coffin is placed into the cremator and the cremation begins.
Behind the scenes
Penmount Crematorium has an open-door policy. Members of the public may book an appointment to view the behind-the-scenes areas during a working day. This helps to clear up myths and answer questions. It shows that each cremation is done separately and that identity is carefully kept. This ensures families receive the correct remains.
Families who wish to witness the coffin being placed into the cremator can ask their Funeral Director to arrange this with us.
Appointment to view the chapels
We also welcome appointments to view the chapels. If you would like to visit before a funeral service at Penmount, please contact the Administration Office on 01872 272871. A member of our team will be happy to help.
