Kernow Education and Advice Line

What is Kernow Education and Advice Line?

Welcome to the Kernow Education and Advice Line (KEAL).

We provide early advice, guidance and information for parents, carers and students with questions or concerns about education. Our team offers clear, reliable support on a wide range of topics, including learning needs, academic pathways and wellbeing.

KEAL offers the opportunity to speak directly with an adviser and, where appropriate, we can signpost you to other relevant services. Our service does not replace specialist or ongoing support where this may be required.

Before contacting KEAL

We encourage you to discuss any concerns with your child’s nursery, school, or college. Common concerns are outlined below:

  • How can I help my child feel confident and ready for school?

Keep routines calm and predictable, offer reassurance, and practise small steps like getting ready together or using simple visual prompts. Talk positively about school and let staff know if certain times feel difficult so they can offer gentle starts or extra support.

  • What can I do to support my child’s learning at home without pressure?

Use short, calm routines and make learning fun through everyday activities like reading, cooking, or games. Celebrate effort rather than perfection. If homework causes stress, talk to the teacher—tasks can often be adapted.

  • How do I build a strong partnership with my child’s school?

Stay in touch regularly, share concerns early, and choose communication methods that feel comfortable for you. Schools welcome openness and want to work with you to support your child. You can also ask for quieter meetings, written updates, or a single point of contact if that helps.

  • What steps can I take if my child is anxious or reluctant about attending school?

Listen calmly to their worries and try to understand what feels difficult. Contact school early so you can plan small, supported steps together - like quieter starts, check-ins with a trusted adult, or gently reduced demands. Celebrate every effort and keep routines steady. Staying connected to school helps rebuild confidence.

  • How can I make sure my child feels included and valued in their learning environment?

Share your child’s strengths and interests with staff, encourage friendships, and talk positively about school. If they find noise, busy spaces, friendships, or transitions tricky, let the school know so they can offer supportive strategies and adjustments.

  • What can I do to support my child’s wellbeing and resilience?

Provide calm time after school, keep routines predictable, and help them name their feelings. Celebrate small steps, build in rest, and maintain healthy habits like sleep and downtime. Keep school informed so support is consistent across home and school.

  • How can I help my child develop a love for learning that lasts?

Make learning enjoyable through everyday experiences, celebrate curiosity, and praise effort. Following their interests and linking learning to real life helps build long lasting motivation.

  • What should I do if I feel my child’s needs aren’t being met at school?

Start by speaking with the class teacher, then the SENDCO if needed. Share what you’re seeing at home - especially signs of anxiety, masking, or overwhelm so staff see the full picture. Keep notes, ask questions, and request a focused meeting. If concerns aren’t heard, you can ask for another staff member, put your concerns in writing, or involve another professional.
