2023 Polling District and Polling Places Review

The public consultation period ended on Monday 6 November. We are now analysing the feedback we received.

Notice of polling district and polling places review

We are reviewing the polling districts and polling places for elections in Cornwall. The public consultation period began on Monday 2 October and ended on Monday 6 November.

The aim of the review is to ensure that all polling stations are suitable and accessible to all voters.

Notice of review - published 2 October 2023

By law, we must review our polling districts and polling places at least once every five years. The current compulsory review must be conducted between 1 October 2023 and 31 January 2025.

Commenting on the review

Between 2 October and 6 November 2023 we invited comments on our arrangements via our Let's Talk Cornwall page.

We were particularly interested to know if there are more suitable premises we could use or if there are any specific issues about to access to our polling stations.

We are now analysing the feedback we received to inform the next stage of the review.

Polling districts

The Council must divide its area into polling districts for all elections. Each parish, unless there are special circumstances, must be a separate polling district. We must try to seek to ensure that all the electors have reasonable facilities for voting.

Polling places and polling stations

A polling place is the building, area or polling district. in which polling stations will be selected.

The polling station is the place where voting takes place. Polling places and polling stations are set by the Acting Returning Officer.

Background

The next general election must take place before Tuesday 28 January 2025. It could happen at any point before then.

Parliamentary constituencies are set to change after the independent Boundary Commission for England (BCE) completed its review of parliamentary constituency boundaries

Statutory orders for the new constituency boundaries will be made by 1 November 2023. After that date, the new boundaries will apply for the next general election.

If a parliamentary by election happens before then, it would be run on current (old) boundaries.
