In March 2023, we welcomed the Local Government Association (LGA) to undertake an Equality Peer Challenge; Cornwall Council’s first since 2013.During their visit, the Peer Challenge team met over 130 staff, members and partners. They have provided a report with detailed feedback and recommendations.
Cornwall Council Equality Peer Challenge Report
They recognised that the Council has considerable ambition in respect of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and very good foundations on which to build and continue our EDI journey. They also thought that our commitment to EDI was stronger than many other local authorities.
We welcomed these recommendations and formed an action plan to address them.
Cornwall Council Equality Peer Challenge Action Plan
In November 2024, we welcomed the team back to Cornwall. They considered our progress against the recommendations. Following their 24-hour visit, they shared their reflections and comments. They continue to recognise our considerable ambition in respect of EDI. They applauded the strong political, strategic and officer leadership. They commended the positive strides we have made in many areas:
- The appointment of an independent chair of our EDI Board. Since October 2024, this has been the Chief Executive Officer of the Hall for Cornwall, Julien Boast.
- The ongoing development of our employee forums.
- Partnering with health colleagues in their Reverse Mentoring scheme
- The extra protected characteristics that we recognise locally. These are Cornish National Minority and Experience of Care.
- The good work between;
- Community Area Partnerships
- Integrated Care Boards; and
- Cornwall Voluntary Sector Forum’s ten thematic alliances.
The Peer Review team made some suggestions and observations for the organisation to build yet further. We are taking these on board as we continue our EDI journey and develop our 2026-2030 Strategy.
