The Elective Home Education Record
The Elective Home Education Record is a form that parents and carers, who home educate, can send to us to help us to meet our legal responsibility. This is to ensure that all children in Cornwall are receiving a suitable education.
Parents and carers are not legally obliged to provide information. However, by completing this form and sharing information about your child’s education, it will helps us to work together to plan, assess and review provision to ensure it enables children to progress and develop.
Guidance for presenting work and learning information
We ask to understand that the education being provided is suitable for the:
- age
- ability
- aptitude, and
- any special educational needs
that a home educated child may have.
When meeting a family, or reviewing reports provided, we review on this basis.
We recognise that there are many different approaches to providing home education. The first thing that we would like to understand is your aims and philosophy for the education you are providing for your child. The choice of philosophy is for you to make and may change over time.
Information provided should demonstrate that the education being provided is suitable and has ‘achieved what it set out to achieve.’ As such, the information should address issues such as the outcomes expected and achieved (unless the home education has just started). It is not a statement of intent about what will be provided, or a description of the approach. This would not enable us to reach a conclusion that a suitable education is being provided.
We would encourage parents and carers to share with us information that also helps us understand the resources and activities they have used eg:
- people with particular skills / interests
- places
- libraries / museums
- computer/ internet
- books
and activities which help to develop social skills such as:
- scouts / brownies / guides
- sporting activities
- local choirs
- local home education groups
- friendship groups
The information parents and carers typically share with us includes:
- plans for / outcomes of entering your child for qualifications
- original work (or photocopies of this)
- photographs
- art work / scrapbooks
- musical and sporting achievements (certificates)
- diary of events and activities
- recordings / on-line blogs / website content
- electronic presentations / content
If you wish to present examples of your education provision in a way that is not represented here please feel free to call and discuss it with your EHE Coordinator. We are happy to listen and add to the above list as new ideas are suggested. It is also a way of sharing good practice.
