Our responsibilities and how we work with parents

We have a duty to act if it appears that a child is not receiving a suitable education.

We will contact you from time to time to make sure your child is getting the education to meet their needs. If the information you provide satisfies us, we will contact you on an annual basis. This is to:

  • ask if you are still home educating your child
  • ask for an update on their education, and
  • check that we have the correct contact information for you

Our Suitable Education Statement provides information for parents on how we determine whether home education is suitable.

Depending on your circumstances and preferences, our annual contact could be through:

  • a home visit
  • a conversation on the phone
  • by video call, or
  • by email

If the information you provide to describe your child’s home education does not satisfy us, we will be in touch with you to seek further details. We will also offer information, advice and guidance.

Further details about our responsibilities for home education can be found in our policy.

Where we remain concerned that your child is not receiving an efficient, full-time suitable education we have a duty to follow this up. Actions may include seeking a school attendance order.
