Schools may need to close in an emergency, such as bad weather, flooding, or no heat or water. Before they close, staff check if it is safe for children and staff to stay or travel. They also get approval from school leaders. If the school closes, they will tell you using their normal system, such as text, email, or social media. You can also check local radio or the council website for updates.
All schools have their own arrangements to contact parents and carers if the school needs to close at short notice. For example, this may be in the event of severe weather.
This may include the use of:
- parent mailing systems
- text
- social media
- the school website
We work with schools to make sure we have up to date information on school closures as they happen. We have a robust procedure for schools to notify us.
In the event of a large number of schools being closed at the same time this information may take some time to be fully updated.
Please make sure you check with your child's school.
