Tips to reduce your rubbish

Most of us know recycling is a must if we’re going to stop climate change. But just as important as recycling is reducing how much waste we produce in the first place.

That’s why we’re changing Cornwall’s collection service in line with most of the rest of the UK and limiting the amount of rubbish we collect to 180 litres fortnightly. That’s roughly 3 to 4 black bin bags.

Cornwall's new waste collection service

  1. Cut down on food waste and save money by visiting Love Food Hate Waste
  2. Buy rechargeable batteries
  3. Think pre-loved and second hand first before buying new clothes, books, furniture etc
  4. Mend things when they break at one of Cornwall’s award-winning Repair Cafés
  5. Choose items with less packaging
  6. Buy yourself a re-usable cup-for-life for your takeaway teas and coffees
  7. Buy a compost bin and get composting
  8. Use your local zero waste refill shop – the ones that allow you to bring your own containers and only take as much as you need
  9. Choose reusable cloth nappies instead of disposables
  10. Stop junk mail by signing up to the Mailing Preference Service.
  11. When you buy presents, give experiences like spa vouchers or dinner out rather than things.
  12. Organise a pre-loved (second hand) clothes swap with friends rather than buying new
  13. Sell, give away, or donate everything you can to charity before binning it
