Parenting programmes are workshops and/or groups that support you with some of the challenges of being a parent. Parents tell us that they learn a great deal from each other and enjoy the support that a group provides. We offer a selection of free workshops, whatever the age or needs of your child.
Understanding your Child (Solihull) – Ages 4 to 11
Join us for a free 20-hour workshop (10 weekly 2-hour sessions) for parents and carers of children aged 4 to 11 years.
This is an evidence-based workshop that covers topics such as:
- How your child develops
- Understanding how your child is feeling
- Tuning into what your child needs
- Responding to how your child is feeling
- Different styles of parenting
- Having fun together
- The rhythm of interaction
- Why is sleep important?
- Self-regulation and anger
- Communication and tuning in
- Looking back and looking forwards
This workshop is offered both face-to-face and online.
Positive Parenting Bitesize
Positive Parenting Bitesize sessions are free workshops run by Together for Families’ team of Parenting Workers who are trained in evidence-based interventions. They are an introduction to some top tips and strategies and incorporates golden threads from our other parenting programmes.
Each session is 2 hours long and sessions are available weekly on different topics.

Supporting Parents and Children Emotionally (SPACE)
SPACE is a free programme for any parent or carer who wants to better understand and support their children’s emotions, as well as their own.
This 5-week face-to-face programme will cover:
- Understanding what is meant by a Trauma Informed approach
- Understanding toxic stress and the flight/fight response
- Practical approaches to support children to regulate their emotions
- Healthy coping strategies for dealing with stress
- Managing different emotions
- Understanding behaviour
- Building resilience in ourselves and our children
- Adopting appropriate expectations of children
- Enhancing your ability to provide nurturing care
If you are a parent/carer of a school-aged child please contact your child’s school to find out if they are running a programme. If you are a parent/carer of a child aged 5 years and under please book your place with Headstart Kernow.

Arguing Better - a workshop for parents with a child of any age
You will learn:
- Where stress comes from and how it can effect you
- Ways to recognise stress and talk about it
- How to support each other through difficult times
- What causes arguments and how to stop them
Both parents are encouraged to attend together, but one parent can attend on their own.

Self Harm Awareness: Children and Young People
This free, half-day training session is suitable for parent/carers to learn more about self harm in the context of young people.
Throughout the session you'll learn the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand self harm in the context of children and young people
- Identify the risk factors that can lead a young person to self harm
- Raise confidence in responding to, and supporting, a young person who self harms

Getting it Right for Children - a workshop for separating or separated parents
You will learn:
- How to stay calm and listen as well as talk
- Why it's helpful to see things from a different point of view
- What to do to stop a discussion from turning into an argument
- Skills for finding solutions and making compromises
Parents should attend separate courses and book separate dates.

Home-Start
Home-Start Kernow offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with children under 5 throughout Cornwall. Parents may struggle at one time or another, you are not alone, that’s when Home-Start Kernow can help.
Home-Start offer a variety of groups for families and most groups operate every week during term time. Most families will get 6 months of group support, some may be offered places for longer if additional support is needed or needs change.
