The application process is multi staged. You must achieve at least the minimum benchmark at each stage in order to pass on to the next. Those who do not achieve the minimum benchmark will be informed that they cannot continue with the application process.
Overview of the process:
1. Online registration and initial eligibility check
This will be open from midday 24 September to midday 14 October 2024 . This will also provide an opportunity to notify us of any reasonable adjustments you may require.
2. Online assessment process
This is a series of online assessments which will take place between 16 October to 12 November 2024. You will need to achieve the minimum benchmark on each one in order to progress to the next.
Stage 1 – Behavioural Questionnaire
Stage 2 – Situational Judgement Test
Stage 3 – FRS Ability Tests
View detailed information on our online registration and assessment process.
3. Application through the Cornwall Council Recruitment System
Successful candidates in the online assessment will get a link to apply through the Cornwall Council recruitment portal. This will need to be completed between 15-24 November 2024.
4. Fitness and practical selection tests with behaviours and values element
After your application is successful, you can book a practical test day. These days will be running between 16-20 December 2024. You will only need to attend one day. More information: Fitness and practical tests.
5. Assessment centre
Those who pass the tests will be invited to an assessment centre day. These will be held between 13-17 January and 20-24 January 2025. The day will include practical activities and a personal interview. The interview will assess candidates against the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Leadership Framework for Leading Yourself, the Firefighter Role Profile and the national Core Code of Ethics. Where necessary CFRS will also run tests to ensure the validity of individuals online assessment results. Further details of the assessment centre day will be made available nearer the time.
6. Pre-employment
Those who pass the assessment centre and are offered a spot on the 2025 development firefighter course will get a conditional job offer. They will then be asked to complete pre-employment checks. This will include a DBS check, a right to work in the UK check, a firefighter medical examination and personal protective equipment (PPE) sizing. These checks will take place during February and March 2025.
7. Formal offer of employment and induction
Candidates will get an offer of employment after passing all pre-employment checks. They will then start their development firefighter induction course on 19 May 2025.
Further notes
Those who don't pass the tests will not receive feedback. This is due to the high number of applications. Those who do not pass the assessment centre may request feedback on their performance. This will be via Teams or, if appropriate, in person. Successful candidates will be able to request feedback about their performance. Please note, it is the candidates' responsibility to request feedback from assessing officers.
Current development firefighters who apply via this route will still need to complete all stages of the recruitment process. This ensures all applicants are treated equitably.
We are looking to take on a number of new development firefighters in 2025. If a sufficient number of people pass the assessment centre, CFRS may create a pool of eligible candidates for a future trainee firefighter course, if needed. Gaining a place within this pool does not guarantee a position. If we place you in an eligibility pool, we will provide you with a full explanation of what this means, including pool review dates.
