All candidates who accept the role of trainee firefighter will attend a 10-12 week induction course.
The induction course will be based at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters, Tolvaddon. It will be largely non-residential. However, there may be occasions throughout the course where you are working from venues outside of Cornwall which will require overnight stays. In these instances, accommodation and will be provided for you.
The course will predominantly run from Monday to Friday but there may be occasions where you are asked to come in on a weekend day. There may also be occasions where you are asked to take part in training during the evenings.
The training will include:
- Core firefighting skills
- Breathing apparatus and fire behaviour
- Road traffic collision
- Water rescue
- Line (rope) rescue
- Hazardous materials
- Trauma care
- Fire safety in the home and in businesses
- Community prevention work
Successful completion of the induction course will move you from trainee to the role of development firefighter.
Development firefighters are allocated a wholetime station and watch. You will work through a development program for around two years. During your development period you will attend regular reviews to monitor your progress. Once you have completed your development program you will attend a final assessment. Successful completion of this will allow you to become a competent firefighter.
