Labelling our information


The Council uses a classification scheme to label information. This is so we can handle it in a consistent, secure way. The scheme helps to:

  • protect information from misuse.
  • meet legal, ethical and statutory obligations.
  • protect the information of staff, citizens, partners and stakeholders.
  • promote good practice in relation to information handling

These are the labels:

Public

Information that is available in the public domain. Information that would not cause damage or harm to the Council, partners or individuals if released.

Controlled

Information that has business value to the Council. Information which is available to anyone who works for, or with, Cornwall Council.

This includes:

  • Cornwall Council staff
  • Members
  • Partners
  • Contractors

Confidential

Sensitive commercial or business confidential information.

This includes information which would not be disclosable under access to information legislation.

This information is only available to anyone who works for, or with Cornwall Council.

This includes:

  • Cornwall Council staff
  • Members
  • Partners
  • Contractors

Personal Confidential

Information that contains personal data as defined in data protection legislation.

This information is only available to anyone who works for, or with Cornwall Council.

This includes:

  • Cornwall Council staff
  • Members
  • Partners
  • Contractors

The labels may include "EYES ONLY" if information is particularly sensitive. This is to ensure only the people who have a right to see the information can view it.
