We collect household rubbish from homes in Cornwall fortnightly. We also take household rubbish at our 14 Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC).
We then transport your rubbish to the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre (CERC) in St Dennis.
The CERC uses Cornwall’s rubbish as fuel to generate sustainable energy. This energy creates enough electricity to power 21,000 homes!
Our waste contractor SUEZ offers tours of the CERC to community groups, schools and universities.
In Cornwall, we manage 9 closed landfill sites. We monitor and maintain these sites to make sure they meet safety and environmental standards. We also work on nature restoration to encourage the return of flourishing wildlife habitats.
Environmental monitoring
The Environment Agency monitors the CERC to make sure it complies with its environmental permit conditions. SUEZ monitors and records emissions continuously, while an independent group monitors local air quality.
You can find more details on our Air Quality page and the SUEZ website.
Community engagement
The CERC Community Forum meets once a year to talk about how the centre is running. Members get regular updates by email and newsletter.
Meeting notes are available on the SUEZ Community Liaison webpage.
