Gas bottle

Can I recycle it?

Gas bottles, including butane canisters, are not collected as part of your recycling collection. Please do not put these in your rubbish or recycling as they may explode when crushed in the collection vehicle.

Large gas bottles, often used for BBQs, can be refilled for further use and should be returned to their supplier (you might require your purchase receipt for this). You can take unbranded gas bottles to one of our Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs), except the site at Dudnance Lane, Pool.

Butane canisters, often used for camping stoves, can be taken to one of our HWRCs except the site at Dudnance Lane, Pool. Some manufactures will take back used canisters to be refilled for further use.

If you are taking gas canisters to a HWRC, please seek advice from a site operative. Do not place gas cylinders in containers as they may explode if they are crushed.
