Clinical waste bags and sharps bins


It’s really important not to put:

- infectious clinical waste
- cytotoxic or cytostatic waste produced during chemotherapy and some other medical treatments

in your household rubbish. These types of waste can by highly hazardous. Please check with your health care provider if you’re unsure.

Orange bag for infectious clinical waste

The orange bag is for clinical waste that could spread infection. When someone has an infectious disease, for example.

Use an orange bag for:

  • waste contaminated with infectious bodily fluids
  • infectious dressings from medical treatment

We collect orange bag infectious waste separately from your household waste using a dedicated clinical waste collection vehicle .

Purple bag for cytotoxic and cytostatic waste

The purple bag is for clinical waste from treatments such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy.

Use the purple bag for waste that is:

  • toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic or harmful to reproduction
  • medical equipment used for the above treatments including:
    • personal protective equipment like gloves, masks and gowns
    • syringes and tubing that don’t have needles

We collect purple bag waste separately from your household waste using a dedicated clinical waste collection vehicle.

Sharps bins 

Sharps bins are for items that can puncture the skin and may be contaminated with blood or bodily fluids.

Sharps bin items include:

  • needles and syringes
  • insulin cartridges
  • finger prick lancets and platforms
  • pen needles
  • blades
  • glass ampoules

We collect sharps bins separately from your household waste using a dedicated clinical waste collection vehicle.

Once your sharps bin is full, you can arrange a one-off collection using the button below.

Types of sharps bins

  • Orange label and lid for infectious sharps waste
  • Yellow label and lid for infectious sharps waste contaminated by medicines
  • Purple label and lid for sharps waste contaminated by cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines

We don’t supply new sharps bins when we collect your old one. You’ll need to get a replacement bin from your healthcare provider or pharmacy.
