What to do if you run a holiday let or other home business

Running a business from home? Make sure you’re disposing of your waste legally

You might not realise it, but if you run a business from home, any recycling or rubbish it generates is classed as commerical waste – even if its just a small amount.

This includes waste from holiday let guests if you:

  • Rent out rooms in your home as self-catering accommodation seasonally or year-round
  • Let out your entire home, annexe, caravan or shepherd’s hut as self-catering accommodation - seasonally or all year round

In the UK, it is illegal to dispose of commerical waste using the domestic/household collections. You must arrange for a licensed waste carrier to collect and dispose of it separately.

Cornwall Council offers a reliable, cost-effective commerical waste collection service. There are also a number of other waste collection contractors in Cornwall.
