Tip 6: Plan your portions like a pro

Serving just enough is key to saving money on food

Maybe calculating portions feels like too much faff. You don’t have time, or like a lot of us, you’re not confident weighing and measuring ingredients when you’re cooking.

But the less leftover food you scrape into your food waste caddy at the end of each meal, the more money you save.

Here’s how you can make it quick, easy and accurate…

Tip 6

Get your portions right so you only buy what you’ll eat.

Get comfortable measuring out the right portion sizes when you cook.

Tool

Check out the FREE Portion Planner Calculator from Love Food Hate Waste to help you work out how much to cook for your household.

It makes working out portions easy for those of us that don’t like weighing and measuring.

Task

The week before you try portion planning:

  1. Find an old ice cream tub to use as a second kitchen food waste caddy.
  2. Put your unavoidable food waste like teabags, onion skins and carrot ends into the ice cream tub.
  3. Put your leftover plate scrapings into your usual food waste caddy so you can see how much food you’re wasting by not portion planning.
  4. Next time you meal plan and before you food shop, use Love Food Hate Waste’s portion planning calculator.
  5. When it’s time to cook, use our handy Ingredients Measuring Guide to help you get your amounts right.

Research has been conducted by the Waste and Resources Action Programme. It shows that 48% of people say portion size is the main reason they leave food on their plate at the end of a meal when they eat out.

The Food Standards Agency has investigated why people generate food waste. A big factor at home is that lots of us find it hard to plan portions and judge or measure out ingredients accurately.
