On 1 September 2025, the UK’s Home Secretary gave statement to Parliament.
The statement explained what the government is doing to make the UK’s borders more secure.
It also set out temporary and long-term changes to the asylum system. This includes a temporary suspension of the Refugee Family Reunion route.
These changes will affect:
- People seeking asylum in the UK
- Those with Refugee Status already living in the UK
- People hoping to bring family members to join them
Refugee Family Reunion route suspended
- From 4 September 2025, 15:00, new applications under the Refugee Family Reunion route will no longer be accepted.
- Applications submitted before 15:00 on 4 September 2025, including those under appeal, will continue to be processed under the existing rules.
- Individuals may still apply through other applicable family routes during the suspension period. Find more information on the Red Cross website.
- Refugees might need to meet new financial or housing requirements.
Government Review and Reform
The Government is conducting a full review and reform of the current family reunion rules. The aim is to establish a fairer and more balanced system that continues to support family unity while ensuring sustainability for local services.
A new family migration policy will be announced before the end of 2025, covering:
- British citizens
- Settled individuals
- Work route migrants
- Protection status holders
