Telecommunications Resilience

Big Change Coming in 2027

Starting in January 2027, the UK will permanently switch off the old landline phone network. (This is called the Public Switched Telephone Network or PSTN). It will be replaced by digital, internet-based phone services (known as VoIP). This is a major change to the country’s communication system, and it’s important for everyone to start preparing now.

Why Is This Happening?

The old PSTN system is outdated, expensive to maintain, and doesn’t work well with modern technology. That’s why phone companies and the government are moving to newer, more reliable systems that use the internet.

What You Need to Do

If you have a home, business, or community group, you should prepare for the switch. Many devices still rely on old phone lines, such as:

  • telecare alarms

  • security systems

  • lift emergency phones

  • door entry systems

  • payment card machines

These will not work after 2027 unless they are updated to digital versions.

This is especially important for people who rely on telecare or emergency alarms. The government and industry are providing guidance to make sure the change is safe.

Benefits of Acting Now

Getting ready now will:

  • help keep essential services running
  • ensure emergency support is available
  • let you benefit from the improved reliability and security of digital technology

To prepare, check your equipment, upgrade devices, and make sure you have a good internet connection. Acting early will prevent last-minute problems and make sure no one is left behind.
