Kevren privacy policy


This is the privacy policy for Kevren, the Cornish language newsletter. This policy explains how and why we use your personal data to keep you informed and in control of your information.

Who we are

Kevren is an online newsletter operated by Cornwall Council’s Cornish Language Office. They are based at County Hall, County Hall, Truro TR1 3AY.

The Data Controller for the information you give us when signing up for Kevren is Cornwall Council. The registered address is: County Hall, Treyew Road, Truro TR1 3AY.

How we collect information from you

The Kevren sign-up form collects and stores the information you give us directly.

Type of information we collect from you

The personal information we collect about you can include:

  • your name and email address for sending your newsletter,
  • your IP address, operating system and browser type for administration purposes and to produce internal reports,
  • the date and time you subscribed.

How your information is used

We will use the information you give us on the sign-up form to send you the Kevren newsletter. Its content includes news and events related to the Cornish language.

We may also use your information to:

  • present the content of the newsletter in the most efficient way for you and the device you are using,
  • enable you to use any interactive features of the newsletter.

Use of cookies

Like other organisations, we also gather information from you indirectly. This is through the use of ‘cookies’ on the Cornwall Council website. Cookies are small pieces of information sent by a business’ or organisation’s website to your computer. They are stored on your hard drive to allow that website to recognise you when you next visit. Cookies are used to improve a website visitor’s online experience. They collect statistical data about your browsing actions and patterns. They do not identify you as an individual.

Using cookies helps us to:

  • improve our website,
  • deliver effective communications, and
  • offer you a more personalised service.

You can switch off cookies by adjusting your browser preferences. Or by using a dedicated browser extension.

How long we hold your data

We regularly review how long we keep your personal information. Currently, we intend to hold your data for up to two years after your last engagement with the Kevren newsletter. By this we mean you opening a newsletter email from us. Unless you ask us to delete your information from our records before that time.

Who else has access to your information

We won’t sell or rent your information to third parties or share it with other Cornwall Council departments for marketing, or any other purposes. This is unless we are required to do so by law. For example, by a court order or for the purposes of prevention of fraud or other crime.

We do transfer your information outside the European Economic Area. This is to a third-party data email platform in the US that processes your data for us.

We only give them the minimum information necessary in order to deliver the newsletter to you. We have a legal agreement in place with them that requires them to keep your information secure. It must not be used for their own direct marketing purposes.

Opting out

If you no longer want to receive Kevren, you can unsubscribe in one of two ways:

  • Click the ‘unsubscribe’ or ‘change preferences’ link at the bottom of any newsletters sent to you.
  • Or, email cornishlanguage@cornwall.gov.uk and we will aim to process your request within 7 days.

We will not contact you again by email for marketing purposes unless you give your prior consent.

Data rights

Your personal information belongs to you and you have the right to:

  • be informed of how we will process it,
  • request a copy of what we hold about you and in commonly used electronic format if you wish. If you provided this to us electronically for automated processing, we will return it in the same way,
  • have it amended if it’s incorrect or incomplete,
  • have it deleted (where we do not have a legal requirement to retain it),
  • withdraw your consent if you no longer wish us to process your information,
  • restrict how we process it.

View, correct or delete your personal data

You can ask to view, delete or correct any personal data Cornwall Council’s Cornish Language Office holds about you at any time. Under data regulation laws we must comply with your request within 21 days.

You will need to make your request to view, amend or delete your personal data in writing. Either by email to dpo@cornwall.gov.uk, or letter to Data Protection Officer Simon Mansell, County Hall, Treyew Road, Truro TR1 3AY.

Correcting inaccurate information or deleting your personal data

If you find the information we hold about you is inaccurate, or you’d like us to delete your details altogether, please write to us and tell us. Either by email at cornishlanguage@cornwall.gov.uk, or by letter to Cornish Language Office, County Hall, Truro TR1 3AY.

Complaints

If you think we’ve got something wrong, please do write and tell us, so we can try to put things right. However, if you are unhappy with:

  • the way we have processed your information, or
  • how we have responded to your request to exercise any of your rights in relation to your data,

you can raise your concerns direct with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). The ICO is the UK's independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest. You can raise your concern by telephone on 0303 123 1113.

We keep this policy under regular review. If you have questions about:
