Review of Historic Flooding in Bodmin


Bodmin has been affected by a number of flood events. Flooding of areas in the centre of the town has commonly been recorded. This is mainly caused by heavy rainfall and the lack of capacity in the town’s drainage system to manage intense rainfall. 

  • Bodmin was affected by flooding during the severe weather occasions of 18471880, 1936 and 1954.
  • In 1975 and 1976 severe storms resulted in property being flooded in the town centre, Church Street and Crockwell Street. Again the drainage system was unable to cope.  In 1979 shops were flooded in Fore Street.  Due to surface water runoff from Bodmin Beacon overloading the drainage system.
  • In 1982 the storm drain and town leat were overwhelmed. This lead to flooding of properties in St Marys Road, Higher Bore Street. Crockwell Street, The Vicarage, Honey Street, Church Square, the Football Club.
  • During 1987 to 1989 heavy rain and inadequate drainage resulted in flooding of properties at Quarry Park and Blowinghouse Lane.
  • During 1993 there were numerous records of flooding. This related to overflowing of the Town Leat and general inadequacy of the drainage system.
  • Further flooding within the town centre occurred in 199419951996 and 1997 and in 1999 the Fire Station was flooded.
  • In 2000 flooding of gardens occurred at Gilbert Road due to a screen blockage.  Later in 2000 the water treatment works at Stoney Lane flooded.
  • In 2001 Crockwell Street, HillsidePark and Honey Street flooded when the drainage system was unable to cope.  In 2002 ponding of water occurred around Priory Pond. In 2003 properties flooded around Priory Park and threatened shops in Fore Street when surface water was unable to drain into the leat.
  • In 2005 flooding occurred in Radnor Close and Gilbert Road. This was when leaf litter contributed to blocking drains and trash screens on this section of the Bodmin Town Leat.  Then in 2008 the childrens play area flooded to a depth 500mm. This was due to surcharging drains following heavy rainfall, whilst the watercourse and pond remained in channel.
  • In 2014 the Bodmin Town Leat broke out of bank in the Priory Flood Storage Area.
  • The Flaxmoor Terrace area of Bodmin suffered from flooding during heavy rain in 2019.
