Cornwall Climate Adaptation Strategy

Cornwall Council is already delivering adaptation actions from our regional Climate Adaptation Strategy. This regional strategy covers Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The strategy's action plan (2023 - 2027) sets out how we will adapt to climate change at a regional level. The strategy identifies key regional risks, including where we depend on each other. For example, Cornwall's railway network relies on connections through Devon. Taking proactive steps helps reduce the impacts of these risks. This strategy focuses on actions where we can collaborate across the region.

We also recognise that some risks and impacts are more of an issue in Cornwall. We are working with partners to develop a more localised Cornwall Climate Adaptation Strategy. This strategy will set out a framework for how Cornwall will manage climate risks. There will be a particular focus on the interaction with climate change. The aim is to reduce climate impacts on our economy, society and environment. The Cornwall Climate Adaptation Strategy will build on:

The strategy will cover:

  • principles and strategic direction for adaptation action

  • priority actions based upon Cornwall’s highest risks

  • a blueprint for community adaptation plans

  • how we will track progress

The blueprints will support community level planning, based on each community’s priorities and vulnerabilities. Evidence for these is being built through pilot locations. To find out more about these pilots, please see our flood risk management projects page.
