There are over 100 jobs available in Cornwall’s care sector that you can apply for now with wages available of up to £14 per hour.
The Proud to Care Cornwall website is the main site advertising care jobs across Cornwall. It has a wide range of roles available with wages above the national minimum wage.
Cornwall Council cabinet member for adults and public health, Andy Virr, said: “It is a common misconception that care work is poorly paid, but these examples show that many organisations pay more than say, supermarket or restaurant work.
“These jobs not only pay well but also offer people a much more rewarding experience. Everyone I’ve spoken to who works in care always says how much value they find in supporting people to live independent lives.”
Ellie Bolton is 17 and works part time as a care worker at Coombe House while she completes her BTEC national diploma in health and social care. She said: “I started off doing the job as a college work placement and now I can’t picture myself doing anything else. I completely fell in love with it. At the start I thought no, I never want to do that ever but now I never want to do anything different. I love it.”

Often no experience is required, and training is provided. A selection of jobs currently available on the site include:
- Support workers in a residential setting at Nos Nom starting at £14 per hour plus £1000 bonus paid for every 6 months worked - supporting two individuals with learning disabilities or autism in their home.
- Care assistant at Kerrier Homecare starting at £12.75 + enhanced rate for weekends - to support people in their own home. Duties will include: light domestic duties, support with medication, meal preparation, shopping, promotion of dignity, respect and independence, providing emotional support and companionship.
- Community carers at Trewcare starting at £11.50 weekdays/£12.00 weekends - supporting people in their own home providing personal care, administering medications, assisting with outings and daily activities.
- Community carers at Carol Spinks Homecare starting at £12.35 - supporting people in their own home providing personal care, administering medications, assisting with outings and daily activities.
- Key workers at Coastline starting at £11.75 an hour - supporting and empowering individuals to take control of their lives.
Cllr Virr added: “The other benefit to roles in the care sector is that they are often flexible around your daily life. We also often see people move successfully through into management roles, including myself as I worked in a care home while studying, as well as colleagues such as Kate Kennally, now CEO of Cornwall Council and Kate Shields, CEO of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. They both began their careers working as support workers and they are now leading Cornwall’s Local Authority and NHS respectively”
