Visitors to this week’s Royal Cornwall Show can watch a live demonstration of Cornish hedge building hosted by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Nature Partnership.
The stone hedge will be created by the Cornwall Rural Education and Skills Trust (CREST) as part of an initiative showing how rural crafts are vital to the region’s heritage and landscape.
All are welcome to the free demonstration which is part of the Local Nature Partnership’s Farming, Food and Nature Hub at stand 286.
Cornish hedges are iconic landmarks and serve multiple purposes including marking field boundaries, providing shelter from wind, supporting a diverse range of wildlife and promoting healthy soils.
Restoring and reconnecting hedges and hedgerow including Cornish hedges are one of the key priorities of the new Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Nature Recovery Strategy.
There are a host of exhibitors at the Local Nature Partnership’s hub which will be open throughout the Royal Cornwall Show taking place at the Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge from June 5 to 7.
Activities at the hub include free soil health testing from Symbiosis Soil Lab; sunflower planting by Cormac; a sustainable food trail created by Sustainable Food Cornwall; a robotic dog display from the University of Plymouth; and advice and support on a range of topics.
Other hub exhibitors are:
Agri-Carbon Kernow AHDB, Biochar, Business Information Point (BIP), Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Cornwall Council Nature Recovery, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Sustainability Awards, Cornwall National Landscapes, Farm Net Zero, Forest for Cornwall, Local Investment in Nature Cornwall, National Trust, St Ewe Free Range Eggs and Westcountry Rivers Trust.
The Forest for Cornwall team will also have a stand in the Woodlands Area of the showground near the East Entrance.
There will be advice and support on tree planting, maintenance and news on events and workshops coming up later this year.
Lord Teverson, Chair of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Nature Partnership, said:
“Farming and nature have always gone together, you can’t produce food without nature’s help. There are two big messages in today’s world: food security, and the vital need for nature recovery. Both together are not just possible, but essential. Our Farming, Food and Nature Hub shows the way forward.”
Cllr Adam Paynter, deputy leader of Cornwall Council, said:
“Come and chat to one of our many exhibitors at the Farming, Food and Nature Hub and find out what support is on offer to our farming community so we can help nature thrive.”
The Royal Cornwall Showground has gifted part of the hub pitch for the Cornish hedge demonstration. It will form the first section of a new, permanent Cornish hedge at the showground.
