If you’re a homeowner in Cornwall wanting to improve the energy efficiency of your home, but are not sure where to start, you can get free and impartial advice on the most suitable measures.

The Homewise tool gives energy saving advice to help your save money on energy bills and boost the energy rating of your home.

And once you know what green improvements you’d like to make, you can apply for a lower-cost loan through a Council-backed scheme.

The Green Home Improvement Scheme aims to fill the gaps for those who are ineligible for grants. Homeowners and private landlords can apply; however the scheme is not open to properties used as holiday lets or second homes.

The scheme is aimed at:

  • Homeowners unlikely to be able to access mainstream lending for a range of circumstances including employment status, credit history or age;
  • Homeowners considered to be in fuel poverty;
  • Homeowners living with children under 16 years of age;
  • Homeowners living with long-term health issues or disabilities.
  • Park homeowner/residents;
  • Landlords making energy efficiency improvements to their Private Rental Sector properties that positively impact their tenants.

Lendology CIC runs the loan scheme on behalf of Cornwall Council.

Olly Monk, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for housing, said:

“Poor energy efficiency in homes can impact on health and wellbeing, as well as costing more to heat.

“It can be hard to find impartial, practical advice on making changes to our homes which can be costly to introduce but make our homes healthier to live in and cheaper to run.

“We want to help make Cornish homes warmer, healthier, more energy efficient and kinder to the planet. And that’s why I’d encourage anyone interesting in making green improvements to their homes to first check out the Homewise tool and then get in touch with Lendology to talk through your options.”

The Green Home improvement Loans Scheme has received £518,254 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
