With Storm Goretti approaching, an red wind warning is in place for dangerous winds across Cornwall.


A Red warning for wind is in place from 4 - 11pm today, meaning dangerous stormy conditions with a significant risk to life.

What this means

Storm Goretti will bring extremely dangerous conditions this evening, including:

  • Damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down. Flying debris poses a serious danger to life.
  • Roads, bridges, and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services, and flights.
  • Power cuts affecting other services, including mobile phone coverage.
  • Very large waves and beach material thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts, and homes.

Please only travel during this period if absolutely essential. 

Coastal areas

Exposed coastal areas will be particularly dangerous overnight and into Friday due to large waves and strong winds, so please stay away.

Do not take risks, but if you see someone in trouble along the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Met office

According to the latest Met Office forecast, strong winds are expected to hit Cornwall from 3pm today, increasing in strength from 4pm, with gusts reaching 80–100 mph in exposed areas.

A wider yellow warning runs from 3pm today until 6am tomorrow, bringing gusts of 50–70 mph, heavy rain, and the potential for sleet or snow over higher ground.
