Cornwall’s libraries loaned out a staggering 35,500 children’s books throughout the school holidays as a record number of youngsters completed this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

More than 8,000 young people across the Duchy signed up to the challenge, which encourages children aged four to 11 to read throughout the summer break, earning themselves prizes and certificates along the way. There’s also a mini challenge for under-fours.

Libraries across Cornwall welcomed 1,321 new members.

And this year’s Story Garden theme captured the imagination of children across the Duchy with 5,063 completing the main challenge by reading six books or comics - that’s Cornwall’s highest ever completion rate (68%).

Councillor Sarah Preece, cabinet member with responsibility for Libraries and Culture at Cornwall Council, said:

“I’d like to say a massive well done to all the young people who took part in this year’s summer reading challenge.
“It’s fantastic to see so many children embracing the challenge and reading throughout the summer holidays.
“I’d also like to say a big thank you to all of our library staff who have supported families and hosted so many fantastic free events.”

Paul Evered, Library Service Delivery Manager at Cornwall Council, said:

“The Summer months are the busiest time of year for our library staff. They did an amazing job in supporting and encouraging children to take part in the challenge and hosted some really creative activities for families throughout the summer.
“It’s brilliant that so many children embraced this year’s challenge and we hope they will continue visiting their local libraries to enjoy more books and take part in events and activities.”

Cornwall Council provides books, IT services and online resources to all libraries across the Duchy through the Cornwall Library Service.

Cornwall has 28 libraries, and a mobile library service. 24 libraries have been devolved to town and parish councils, a community group and a social enterprise. Cornwall Council has retained four libraries and runs the mobile library service.

Library membership is free for anyone who lives, works or studies in Cornwall.
