Community ownership of land and property

Communities are seeking more direct control of land and property assets in their area.

More community ownership enables a more flexible approach to management. Decisions can be made to respond to the needs of the community.

We have commissioned a report to provide guidance to communities who would like to take on ownership of land and property assets in their community.

The report and supporting toolkit allow communities to establish which structure is right in each particular circumstance.

The structures included in the report and survey are:

  • Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG)
  • Company Limited by Shares (CLS)
  • Community Benefit Society (CBS)
  • Community Interest Company (CIC)
  • Community Land Trust (CLT)
  • Cooperative Society (Co-op)
  • Community Right to Bid

The report describes each structure and provides case studies, as well as offering further resources.

We are currently working on an accessible and user-friendly format for displaying the interactive survey. If you would like access to the survey in the meantime, please contact VitalityTowns@cornwall.gov.uk.

As noted in the report, this does not constitute professional advice. Professional advice, including legal and VAT advice should always be sought.
