Re-registering a birth

Please read our information on how we are supporting residents and businesses, as well as information on affected services.

What is re-registration?

Re-registration is the completion of a new record of birth which supersedes an original registration.

Why do I need to re-register my child's birth?

There are two circumstances in which a child may be re-registered:

  • If the child’s natural parents have married or formed a civil partnership with each other since the child was born
  • Adding the father’s details if they weren’t recorded at the time of registration.  If the child's parents are unmarried and not in a civil partnership with each other and would like to add the natural father’s details to the birth record

To book an appointment please contact us on 0300 1234 181 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm).

For contact details and opening hours, please see our Registration Offices page.
