The role of the Chairman
The Chairman is elected by the Council each May and serves for 12 months.
They are the civic and ceremonial head of the Authority. They also represent Cornwall Council at a variety of events and functions in a non-political role. The Chairman promotes the interest and the reputation of the Duchy acting as an ambassador for Cornwall.
The Chairman also chairs Full Council meetings, making sure that
- its’ business is carried out fairly and efficiently
- the meeting is conducted in accordance with the Constitution
The Chairman promotes:
- public involvement in the Council’s activities
- the Council’s corporate strategy
Pauline Giles BEM - Chairman of Cornwall Council
Councillor Pauline Giles first got elected to Cornwall Council in 2017 representing the St Blazey electoral division. She was elected Chairman of Cornwall Council in May 2021.
Pauline, a Breast Cancer survivor, founded BosomBuddiesUK in 2010 with emphasis on education of school age girls in ‘How to Check’ and what to look for and symptoms of Breast Cancer.
In 2018 Pauline and her Partner David set up St Blazey Recycle Reuse Resale CIC, diverting reusable household goods and furniture from the waste stream, repurposing it to help local families in crisis.
Locally, she is very active within her local community and was awarded the BEM in HM Queen’s birthday honours in June 2021.
Vice Chairman is Cllr Jordan Rowse
Councillor Jordan Rowse is currently the Cornwall Councillor for Bethel and Holmbush in St Austell, since May 2021. Prior to this, Cllr Rowse was the Cornwall Councillor for Par, Biscovey and St Blazey Gate between 2017-2021.
Cllr Rowse is the youngest councillor to ever sit on Cornwall Council, having first been elected the age of 20. Cllr Rowse became the youngest Vice Chairman of Cornwall Council, at the age of 24, after receiving unanimous support from Full Council in June 2021.
Locally, Cllr Rowse is very active within his Division, and the wider town of St Austell – sitting also as a St Austell Town Councillor.
Aside from being a councillor, Cllr Rowse has worked for a number of Cornish MP’s since 2015 – allowing him to work in both local and national politics.
Cllr Rowse also sits as a Director of St Austell Bay Economic Forum, attracting inward investment in to St Austell to better the town, and as Chairman of Biscovey FC.
