Our academic partners at Falmouth University

We are fortunate to be working with the following academic partner at Falmouth University:

Professor Nick Peres

Professor Nicholas PeresNick works at Falmouth University as a Professor in the Centre of Blended Realities. His career has moved from broadcast media into digital innovation in the NHS. He continues as Director of

  • Digital Innovation
  • and Transformation

at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. Here he co-leads the Digital Futures programme. He is also an XR technologies adviser for NHS England. Through dual roles at Falmouth and in the NHS, he maintains an active practice. This bridges research inquiry with the realities of healthcare delivery and transformation.

Nick's research investigates the meeting of technology, clinical expertise, and human experience. Here diverse stakeholders co-create solutions that balance technology with care needs. As a result he developed the Minimal Viable Simulation (MVS). His innovation PatientVR exemplifies this approach. This uses 360° documentary film-making techniques to immerse healthcare professionals in patient experiences. As a result this created powerful tools for clinicians reflecting on compassionate practice.

Nick completed his PhD at the University of Plymouth while in his NHS role. His studies examined

  • technological mediation
  • and the development of humanistic skills

in medical simulation. This created new methods for

  • recording
  • and analysing

human interaction in simulated and practice environments. Nick has shaped national policy through contributions to

  • frameworks,
  • landscape reports,
  • and guidance.

This includes NHS England's VR Accessibility Guidelines and XR courses. Nick also co-chairs many innovation and XR communities of practice. His work has attracted parliamentary award nominations and invitations to 10 Downing Street. He has presented a TEDx, and is a regular presenter at conferences.

His research has featured in WIRED Magazine, BBC, ITV, and Sky. Through his roles in the NHS and on UKRI's Mindset Advisory Board, he influences how emerging technologies are

  • understood
  • adopted
  • and integrated

into health and care practice.
