Introduction to Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) Cornwall

Cornwall Council is one of 30 local authorities across the UK that has been awarded funding by NIHR to establish a Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC). The HDRC builds upon Cornwall Council’s track record of cross-sector engagement. It is a collaboration with:

  • the University of Exeter
  • Falmouth University
  • the University of Plymouth
  • along with local community and voluntary sector organisations.

The HDRC is:

  • establishing research focussed partnerships,
  • and ways of working

in Cornwall Council and its communities to:

  • reduce health inequalities, and
  • improve the health of the residents of Cornwall.

By working with the people of Cornwall to identify:

  • local needs, and
  • priorities

we will develop practical and sustainable opportunities to:

  • stimulate
  • support, and
  • share research

to identify evidence-based solutions to the factors impacting people’s health. We will create a culture of using research and evidence in the Council and communities Cornwall for the good of all of us.

National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Determinants Research Collaborations enable local authorities to become more research-active. This will embed a culture of evidence-based decision making.

The NIHR has awarded £150 million to 30 HDRCs across the UK. This is to provide:

  • the capacity and capability for local authorities to
  • undertake public health research
  • to address the wider determinants of health and health inequalities.

Our approach to the five year plan is:

  • Year 1 – Strong from the Start
  • Years 2-3 - Building Core Capacity
  • Years 3-4 - Consolidate and Grow
  • Years 4-5 - Moving Forward
