Healthy Under 5s helps early years settings create healthy environments. It supports children to develop habits for life. It encourages daily wellbeing practices and strong partnerships with families.
At the centre of the programme is the Healthy Under 5s Framework. This provides practical steps across eight important areas of children’s health and wellbeing:
food and nutrition
oral health
physical activity
sleep
emotional health and wellbeing
infection control, illness and accident prevention
community, environment and responsibility
toilet training
Who can use the Healthy Under 5s Framework?
Early Years Settings
Healthy Under 5s is open to early years settings across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, including nurseries, pre-schools, childminders and reception classes.
Early years settings can access the full Healthy Under 5s Framework, guidance, training information and supporting resources through the Services for Schools Early Years platform.
Other Early Years Services
Although the Healthy Under 5s Framework has been designed with early years settings in mind, it may be useful to other organisations, services or groups in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly working with young children. The Framework offers a clear and accessible way to explore how you promote children’s health and wellbeing.
Organisations, services or groups working with early years children in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly can request a copy of the Framework by emailing healthyunder5s@cornwall.gov.uk.
For Parents and Carers
If your child attends an early years setting in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly, speak to the setting about Healthy Under 5s. Settings participating in the programme will display their Healthy Under 5s Pledge and can tell you more about how they support children's health, wellbeing and development.
