Free home fire safety check

In Cornwall, we are committed to reducing fire deaths by ensuring that every home in the county has working smoke alarms. Safelincs is an online home fire safety check that can provide the user with a personalised fire safety action plan. In addition, for high risk community members it will generate a free home fire safety visit from us.

The easy-to-follow online home fire safety check, has been developed through a partnership between the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), Fire Kills and Safelincs. This also allows referrals to be made directly to Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.

The online portal will go through a series of questions to help us assess your level of need. If you meet the high risk criteria, it will then ask you to complete the referral form with your contact details. If you do not meet the high risk criteria you can continue with the second part of the portal. This will take you through your home one room at a time. The simple questions will help you spot fire risks in your home and advice on the steps you can take to reduce those risks.

If you meet the criteria for a free home fire safety check, we will contact you or your representative to arrange a convenient date and time.

The home fire safety check is a person centred risk assessment, where we support you with prevention advice but also signpost to other services for support and help where needed. The check will take between 30 - 60 minutes of your time. The Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) officer, will be wearing uniform and carrying an identification card. Please ask to see the ID card, and if you require confirmation telephone the freephone helpline 0800 3581 999.

During the visit we will : -

  • Carry out a person-centred risk assessment (with bespoke prevention advice)
  • Identify and make you aware of the potential risks in your home offering advice to reduce or prevent these risks
  • Help you put together an escape plan for future use, should there be an emergency
  • Ensure you have working smoke alarms (fitting detection where appropriate)
  • Signpost to other agencies, where needed for additional help and support

If you are not home when we visit, we will leave a postcard, detailing the date and time of the call along with a reference number and telephone number you can contact.
