Heritage Statement or Heritage Impact Assessment

A Heritage Statement sometimes referred to as a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) is a document that outlines the historic or archaeological significance of a building or landscape within its wider setting. It includes an outline of any proposed works, an assessment of their impact on the building or landscape and a mitigation strategy.

The local Historic Environment Record (HER) should be consulted and the building or landscape should be assessed by an expert.

These documents may be required for planning applications within designated areas such as conservation areas, for Listed Building Consent or for developments near areas of known archaeological significance. These statements can also be requested by the planning authority to assess a potential developments impact on non-designated areas or sites. The scope of the Statement or Assessment will be dependent upon the scope of the application.
