Do you have a plan for the General Wolfe?

We want to hear from organisations interested in buying and refurbishing a well-known derelict building in the heart of St Austell Town Centre.

Former pub, the General Wolfe and the adjoining former Globe Hotel building, was converted into 13 flats more than 20 years ago. The building, which had fallen into disrepair, was bought by Corserv in 2020 with the aim of renovating the building to provide much needed housing in the town.

Since then, the projected costs of undertaking this work have increased significantly, with latest estimates at more than £2.5m, making the renovation project unviable for Corserv and Cornwall Council.

As a result, we’re inviting Expressions of Interest from groups with plans to bring the property back into use.

Cllr Peter La Broy, Cornwall Council cabinet member for housing, said:

“We appreciate there are a lot of strong feelings in the town about the future of this building and the fact that little progress has been made over recent years. Some want it to be demolished, others want it to be protected.

“It is time for a decision to be made on the building’s future and as part of this process we want to understand if there are any community groups or other organisations out there with a vision for the site.”

Cllr Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council cabinet member for economic regeneration and investment, said:

“With its key location in the town centre, there is an opportunity here to bring the building back into use and create an attractive gateway to the high street.”

The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest is Monday 11 August, 2025. Find out more about submitting an Expression of Interest for the General Wolfe site in St AustellStory posted July 2, 2025
