People aged between 19 and 25 can now save on the cost of daily and weekly bus tickets through the Transport for Cornwall app.
The app discount brings down the cost of tickets offering unlimited travel within Cornwall – reducing an £8 daily ticket to £5 and a £32 weekly ticket to £20.
It’s the first-time discounted bus travel has been offered in Cornwall specifically for young people aged between 19 and 25. The discount will only be available through the Transport for Cornwall app and age-verification will be required before purchasing tickets.
Child (under 19) daily and weekly tickets have also been reduced to £5 and £20 respectively to reflect the discounted fares. Child tickets continue to be available to buy online, at a bus station or on the bus.
Connor Donnithorne, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for transport, said:
“This is about making it easier for young people in Cornwall to have a choice about how they travel both now and into the future.
“It’s the latest in a long line of efforts to encourage more people to travel by bus. We’ve invested in the infrastructure to improve journey times and reliability as well as real time bus information available for passengers; while funding for the bus fares pilot has meant we have been able to keep ticket prices lower than their true market cost over the last three years.
“We have seen the benefits of this work with more than 12.7m passengers traveling on the bus network in Cornwall in 2024, an increase of over 2.7% on 2023. As a council we continue to subsidise around half of all bus services in the county.
“Cornwall’s rural geography and scattered settlements does make it harder to run sustainable services and ultimately we need more people to travel by bus to help make services more sustainable in the long term.”
The Transport for Cornwall app brings together timetables and information about all bus services in the county in one place for the first time. Users can view timetable, buy and store their day, weekly or town passes on the app, as well as give feedback on their bus journey. You can also see Beryl bikes availability which will provide a platform to promote active travel.
The Young Person discount, which is being funded through existing Government funding for Cornwall’s bus network, will be available until December 2025 in line with the current national £3 single journey fares cap scheme. The offer will then be reviewed by the Transport for Cornwall partnership.
