A new video has been created to let new mums and dads know about all of the support available as they embark on their parenting journey.
At just over three minutes, it gives a useful overview of Cornwall’s ‘Start for Life’ programme, which provides trusted advice and support every step of the way from pregnancy until your child is two.
The short animation can be found on Cornwall Council’s Start for Life web pages and here.
Jodie Pethick, Senior Manager for Start for Life at the council, said:
“Having a baby is a life-changing experience and every family wants to give their child the best start in life. But we know that sometimes that journey as a parent can be tricky to navigate, for lots of different reasons.
“That’s where our Start for Life programme comes in. If you’re a new parent or are expecting the arrival of a little one I would strongly recommend checking out our Start for Life webpages and new video to find out what help and support is available to you.”
Start for Life support begins during pregnancy through maternity services and additional support services. These can include:
- Scans, screening and vaccinations
- Help to choose a place to give birth
- Looking after your mental health and wellbeing, and
- Advice on your physical health and how to stay active
The health visiting team then supports you from late pregnancy onwards and, once your baby is born, will see you at regular points to support you and your child’s health and development. They can help with any questions or issues, such as:
- Infant feeding and nutrition
- Health and development
- Keeping your little one safe
- Becoming a parent
- Building positive relationships with your baby, as well as with your partner, husband or wife
- Mental health support
There is a wide range of additional support available, including:
- Help to quit smoking, be more active and make healthier choices
- Mental health support
- Early Help support for children with additional needs
- Support from food banks
- Housing and benefits help and financial support
- Help from voluntary organisations and charities.
There is also specialist support available for issues such as domestic abuse, problems with drugs and alcohol, and serious mental health problems.
Start for Life also offers local support through our network of Family Hubs which can be found across Cornwall. Family Hubs offer things like activities for parents and children, a meeting space for parents and professionals, and parenting courses.
Jodie added:
“Remember, you’re never alone on your parenting journey. No matter what you’re facing there’s always help available.”
