Young people of Cornwall, we need you!

Cornwall Council is about to embark on one of its biggest ever engagements with young people.

The Annual Conversation between children, young people and council leaders in Cornwall follows on from the work of the authority during the G7.

During the build-up to the summit in June, and throughout the event itself, we heard from a vast number of children and young people in Cornwall about what matters to them, what they would like to celebrate, what they pledge to do and what they want political leaders to do.

Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Barbara Ellenbroek, said: “Our aim during the build-up to the G7 was to inspire a generation to get engaged in their communities and politics - and they did.

“Through a range of projects and events, we heard loud and clear what drives and concerns young people in Cornwall, and this is the next stage in that process.

“We invite young people to take part in the Annual Conversation; to work with us to open a dialogue between the leaders and decision makers here in Cornwall.  We want your voice at the forefront of our decisions.”

When and where is it taking place?

  • Tuesday 2nd November 2021 (evening) - Online- kick-off event
  • Saturday 13th November 2021 (all day) - Pre-event Workshop at The Eden Project, St Austell
  • Tuesday 30th November 2021 (4.00pm - 7:30pm) - The Annual Conversation: at New County Hall, Truro

Since the G7 we have been combining what we have heard from children and young people, using not only the communications received as part of G7 and Y7 but also those such as the Make Your Mark 2020 results, the suggested priorities from children and young people are:

  • Climate, environment and carbon neutrality
  • Mental and physical health and wellbeing
  • Future opportunities in Cornwall – housing and careers for young people

Over the coming weeks, children and young people will be offered an opportunity to check, comment on and add to what we have heard are the priorities, solutions and celebrations for children and young people in Cornwall.

The priorities raised by children and young people also connect with the new council priorities, which are:

  • A brilliant place to be a child and grow up
  • In a thriving, sustainable Cornwall that offers a secure home, a decent income and a great environment for all
  • As part of vibrant, safe, supportive communities where people help each other to live well
  • All supported by our Council - an empowering and enterprising organisation that gets it right first time for our customers

Barbara added: “Our biggest wish is to hear the voices from children and young people from all types of backgrounds in Cornwall and there are loads of ways to get involved.

“Whether you have the confidence to speak out independently or if you can spend the time filling in a survey, it’s important that as many young people as possible take part.”
