More school places for Truro

Cornwall Council has published plans to expand the number of pupils at Penair school in Truro, to help meet the growth in demand across the city and wider area.

A council feasibility study identified the need for more places ahead of a new secondary free school being built between St Agnes and Newquay, for which funding has been confirmed by the Department for Education.

The new school is not expected to be completed until 2024.

Under these plans Penair will see its capacity increase by 150 to 1350, but the number of pupils on roll will begin to increase from September this year.

Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Barbara Ellenbroek, said: “Even with the welcome prospect of a new school, we know that there will be a need for additional places before a new school can be delivered.

“The feasibility study looked at all local options, with Penair considered to offer the best value in terms of sustainability and investment. We look forward to working with the school to deliver this expansion programme.”

Work is underway to plan the expansion programme.  Parents are urged to talk with the school if they have any questions.

The Council undertakes regular review and analysis of pupil forecasts for the County to identify any areas that may need additional school places.

Work is also underway at Launceston College to expand the school by 300 places in order to meet increased demand.
