Around 200 people attended a special event to celebrate the talent and achievements of Cornwall’s children in care.
Joined by foster carers and friends, the children enjoyed a range of activities at the Eden Project on Sunday (July 20).
They dabbled in parkour, met special furry friends, and took part in science activities during a fun-filled day.
The event was organised by Awena Virtual School with help from charity Carefree, which supports children and young people aged 11-25 who are in or leaving care.
Part of Cornwall Council’s Together for Families directorate, Awena supports the education of children in care and those who have, or have had, a social worker.
The virtual school tracks their progress at their ‘real’ school providing additional support if needed.
Cllr Hilary Frank, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Schools, who attended the event, said:
“It’s impossible not to be inspired by the spirit, talent and energy of the children and young people, and by the support of the foster carers.
“My thanks to the teams at Carefree and Awena, not just for making the day such a success, but for the vital work they do all year round to help the children and young people thrive.
“The event really showed what we can all achieve together.”
Activities on the day included a visit from Pets as Therapy, who brought Aggie the miniature schnauzer and Mary, a 3-legged greyhound, to see the children.
PK Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications provided fun, science-based activities and Cornwall’s Library Service set up a quiet corner for children to look at some books and grab a goodie bag.
After guests were shown some parkour moves, children were invited to have a go by Urban Playground Group who then performed a dazzling show called ‘The Kids Who Couldn’t Sit Still’.
The team from Awena welcomed guests provided glitter tattoos while Carefree provided tabletop games including a cup-stacking race.
Cornwall Council’s Business Support ensured that every child received a personalised certificate with words of encouragement and Graeme Plunkett, head of school effectiveness, highlighted the amazing talents, achievements and interests of all of the children who attended.
Chloe Phillips, Deputy Headteacher at Awena, Cornwall Virtual School for children in care, said:
“It was fantastic to see all the children and young people enjoying all the fun and creative activities at Eden on Sunday.
“Awena supports children in care academically but also recognises the importance of children celebrating who they are as people, for example the kindness they show to others, their sense of humour and ambitions for the future. Sharing activities and lunch together helped to create special memories for everyone who was there.”
