From hedgehog homes to banana lollies – new activity booklet helps families stay healthy and happy this summer

A new activity booklet has been launched to help families in Cornwall enjoy a fun-filled, action-packed summer holiday.

Five Ways On Summer Days is packed to the brim with weird and wonderful ideas, challenges, recipes and activities to boost our physical and emotional wellbeing.

It taps into the Five Ways To Wellbeing, which encourage us to: take notice of the world around us; connect with people (or animals!); get moving, preferably outdoors; give and be kind to other people; and find time for yourself.

Activities and ideas include:

  • Making sweet treats, such as iced banana lollies, to deliver to friends (including recipes).
  • Building a hedgehog home (including instructions).
  • Writing a story.
  • Getting into bird-watching by making a bird-feeder (with instructions).
  • Donating unwanted toys to charity

It also includes information on some of Cornwall’s fantastic attractions as well as details on activities such as the Summer Reading Challenge and the National Literary Trust’s ‘Walk and Talk’ events.

The booklet was created by the council’s Headstart Kernow team, alongside the Health and Wellbeing Partnership.

Cllr Barbara Ellenbroek, cabinet member for children and families at Cornwall Council, said:

“The summer holidays are super exciting for our children, but for parents and carers it can be tricky coming up with things to do in all that free time.

“This is where our new Five Ways on Summer Days booklet proves invaluable as it is bursting at the seams with ideas and activities that are tailor-made to help us feel happy and healthy.

“One of the council’s key priorities is that ‘Cornwall is a brilliant place to be a child and grow up’ and this booklet will definitely play a role in helping to achieve this.”
