Cornwall Council’s public health team have published the Healthier Weight Strategy for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly which takes a 10-year approach to address the factors which can influence our health in the places that we live, such as the food environment and having local places to be active.

Interim Director of Public Health for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Eunan O’Neill said:

“On World Obesity Day it seems apt to highlight this strategy which looks at people’s weight as a whole, recognising that it’s not a simple issue.

“We live in a society that shows inherent bias around people who are overweight and obese and we are committed to embedding a compassionate approach and reducing weight stigma. We want the next generation to grow up with choices around their health, wellbeing and happiness.”

Cornwall Council cabinet lead for adult social care and health, Andy Virr said:

“Obesity is a complex disease which continues to impact much of the population. We know that it is about more than just eating less and moving more.

“To address the issue, we must look at the systems around us that have influence such as the media, access to physical activity and food production. It has been identified that there are 108 factors that contribute to people living with a higher than average body weight.

“It will help us to focus work on these systems, rather than individuals. The strategy also builds on some of the great work that exists in Cornwall by partners and providers, through activity sessions, healthcare, and localities.”

The aims of the strategy are to support people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to maintain a healthier weight, equal to or lower than the England average and to reduce the inequalities associated with healthy weight.

Support is available from the Healthy Cornwall team in a range of areas such as healthy pregnancy, weaning, cooking, being active and healthy eating. This can be in person or digital support.
