New year, new you? How about a new career in care?

As a new year dawns, you may well have decided on a new career – social care could be the ideal choice.

As well as being hugely rewarding, working in Cornwall’s adult social care sector can lead to a wide variety of career progressions as well as pay rates above the Foundation Living Wage.

A number of jobs currently being advertised on the Proud to Care Cornwall website demonstrate that salaries are competitive with other sectors and can lead to personal growth in a number of key areas, including support work, nursing, social work and management.

No matter what role you start in or where you are in your career path, there are always opportunities to develop and progress if you are passionate about improving other people’s lives.

Social care is always changing to meet the needs of an ageing population and people living longer with complex conditions. There’s also great focus on supporting people to live independently, often at home. This means that care organisations are working in new ways and creating lots of new and exciting job roles as a result.

There are a range of jobs available with full training and support provided

One of Cornwall Council’s main priorities is to make sure everyone in Cornwall can start well, live well and age well in vibrant, safe and supportive communities. Our vision is to ensure that residents get the right care, in the right place at the right time to help, prevent, reduce or delay the need for ongoing support and maximise their independence.

Cllr Dr Andy Virr, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Adults and Public Health, said: “You may have some experience of working in care or you may be completely new to caring - there are a range of job levels available, flexible working hours, full training and support, and plenty of opportunities for progression to senior roles including managerial positions.

“What we need now are people of all ages and backgrounds with empathy and a caring nature to work in our social care settings.”

Cornwall’s contracted care providers pay the Living Wage Foundation rate (the ‘real’ living wage) as a minimum – a new rate of £9.90 is due to be introduced by May 15, 2022. There is a strong commitment across the health and social care system to help people achieve long-term, rewarding careers which support Cornwall’s residents.
