Find a career in care and look forward to going to work

For anyone in Cornwall starting a career or thinking about changing their career, have you considered social care?

Cornwall Council works with providers across Cornwall under the Proud to Care Cornwall initiative and recently spoke to care sector worker, Kerry Noonan, about her experiences of working in care.

Kerry, a recruitment lead for Green Light PBS Ltd, has spoken about how she came to work in the care sector, the sorts of people she works with, and how rewarding her role is.

Kerry said:

“We have people working with us who used to work in hospitality, retail, construction and what we find is that all of those skills contribute to a really diverse workforce. Some people are hesitant to pursue a career in the care sector but we find that as soon as they speak to our support workers then all of that hesitancy goes away.”

Cllr Andy Virr, Cabinet member for adult social care and health said:

“I’d urge anyone who is interested in finding out more about a career in the care sector to take a look at the Proud to Care Cornwall website. In most cases you don’t need to have any previous experience, it’s having the right qualities that really matters. I’m so appreciative of the job that Cornwall care workers do, they play a vital role in keeping Cornwall’s health and care system moving.”

One of Cornwall Council’s main priorities is to make sure everyone in Cornwall can start well, live well and age well in vibrant, safe and supportive communities.

Residents should get the right care, in the right place at the right time to help, prevent, reduce or delay the need for ongoing support and maximise their independence.

Kerry also talked about the career progression available to social care workers, adding:

“I’ve seen people go from support worker, to senior, to deputy to registered manager and really finding fulfilment in their role. It’s fantastic to see how proud they are. To look forward to going to work, to make a difference is what we all want really”.

A career in social care can also provide a strong bridge to a career in the NHS, particularly as roles and functions work together in a more integrated way.
