Bathroom contractors needed to help people live independently in their own homes

Cornwall Council is looking for more bathroom contractors to help residents live independently in their own homes after a surge in demand.

As part of its work to support residents to live in vibrant, safe, supportive communities the council is calling for more fitters to get involved in helping vulnerable and disabled people to have safe and accessible facilities.

Cllr Andy Virr, Cornwall Council cabinet member for adults and public health said:

“We urgently need highly skilled tradespeople to install accessible bathroom facilities. These desperately needed adaptations help promote people’s wellbeing, minimise their risk of accidents and help keep people out of hospital and residential care.

“As well as being a highly skilled tradesperson you will need a caring and sensitive approach, have an understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality and be DBS checked.”

Cllr Olly Monk, cabinet member for housing and planning said:

“We are working hard to deliver bathroom adaptations required by households across the Cornwall. We are on a drive to recruit multiskilled tradespeople and would like to hear from you if you have the sorts of skills required for this important work.’’

Recent adaptations have drastically improved people’s lives. In one case a terminally ill person urgently needed an adapted toilet and with the help of a bathroom contractor they were able to get the toilet installed within a few days.

They said:

“I am completely gobsmacked that this has been approved and arranged so quickly. You and the team have truly lifted us. Thank you.”
