Residents in mid Cornwall can find out more about how they can lower their carbon impacts and help contribute to tackling the climate crisis at a free event this weekend.
The People’s Climate Festival takes place at Cornwall College, St Austell, on Saturday, November 27, from 10am to 4pm, and is open to all.
It is hosted by four Community Network Panels - St Austell and Mevagissey; St Blazey, Fowey and Lostwithiel; China Clay; and Truro and Roseland - with support from several mid Cornwall town and parish councils and community groups.
The event is organised to encourage everyone to reduce their carbon emission and is supported by Cornwall Council’s Climate Commitments programme.
Sessions include:
- Carbon Buddy Project – ‘how to start your climate journey’
- Improving the Cornish farmed environment
- Youth action for climate security
- Future proofing your home – understanding renewable energy
There are also workshops and information stalls giving advice on:
- Electric vehicles
- Charging points
- E-bikes and e-scooters
- Biodiversity and making space for nature
- Recycling and repurposing to cut waste
- Supporting wildlife
Councillor Martyn Alvey, Cornwall’s cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “Following the COP26 climate summit this is great event for people to come along with any questions if they are wondering what they can do to help with the climate crisis.
“The event will provide some help and guidance so you can play your part in helping Cornwall become carbon neutral and support wildlife and biodiversity.”
Visitors at the event will also be able to try out e-Bikes and speak to experts about how they work, how much they cost to run and the benefits to our health and environment.
Cornwall Council has been awarded £451,000 from the Department for Transport to encourage more people to try e-Bikes, swapping four wheels for two, and will be on hand to give advice.
The evening before the Climate Festival there is a special showing of '2040', an Australian documentary about the effects of climate change, at White River Place cinema, St Austell, on November 26, at 7.30pm.
