Thinking of standing for election? Find out more about representing your local community at the Councillor Fair

Are you passionate about your local community? Do you want to make a difference and help improve the lives of people in Cornwall?

If so, you might want to consider standing for election to become a councillor.

There are 213 parishes across Cornwall which are represented by a combination of town and parish councils, and one city council. In addition, Cornwall Council has 87 electoral divisions and there is a councillor for each one.

The Councillor Fair is being held at New County Hall in Truro on Saturday, January 18 to give people more information about the role and what it involves.

Anyone interested in standing to be a councillor for their local town, city or parish council, or Cornwall Council, can book a place for the free event.

The fair will include talks from officers at Cornwall Council, including Kate Kennally, Chief Executive, and serving councillors will be on hand to answer questions.

Prospective candidates will also have the opportunity to speak to staff from Cornwall Council to find out more about the support that is available should they chose to stand for election.

Councillor Pauline Giles BEM, who is Chairman of the Council and will be chairing the event, said: “Being a councillor is very rewarding and you can a make a real difference to the lives of the people that live in your local community.

“If you’re passionate about Cornwall and the people who live here, come and find out more and see if it’s right for you.”

Kate Kennally added: “Councillors come from all walks of life but the one thing they have in common is a desire and passion to make a difference.

“We need people from all backgrounds and experiences who reflect the whole of Cornwall to stand for election.

“I would urge anyone who is interested in being a councillor to come along to the Councillor Fair to find out more.”

You can see the full itinerary and book a place for the Councillor Fair on the Cornwall Council website.
