Cornwall Council’s Annual Report and the preparations for Armed Forces Day in Falmouth this summer will all be discussed when the Cabinet meets at County Hall in Truro next week.
Also on the agenda will be the development of the space sector in Cornwall, a proposed increase in the Post 16 subsidised travel scheme contribution and a report on the provisional financial performance of the council for 2022/23.
The Annual Report, which can be read on the council’s website, spotlights the authority’s successes in the past 12 months, focused on our priority outcomes and driven by our overarching mission: ‘working with communities for a carbon neutral Cornwall, where everyone can start well, live well and age well.’
Among the achievements highlighted in the report are the delivery of over £8 million to households in financial hardship via the Household Support Fund, the delivery of a new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and an extra £45 million invested into adult social care services.
The Cabinet, who will meet in the Trelawny Room at 10am on Wednesday, May 10, will also be asked to endorse the work underway to arrange the national Armed Forces Day celebrations, which will take place in Falmouth between 23 and 25 June.
A flag relay, which started in Bodmin last week, will visit locations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in the build up to the event, which is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors.
Highlights will include a full military parade through Falmouth, a military village showcasing service equipment with demonstrations, air displays, the chance to tour a Royal Navy frigate, entertainment throughout the town and a fireworks display.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Cllr Linda Taylor, Leader of the Council, said: “The annual report is a real reflection of the work we have carried out in the past year, and I am proud of our record.
“The priorities we have set are not just soundbites, they are measures by which we can be judged, and we have taken positive steps on all of them, and will continue to do so, with the Cabinet meeting also considering a two-year strategy for supporting Cornwall’s emerging Space sector to create jobs and growth locally. .
“I am also looking forward to discussing the preparations for Armed Forces Day, which will once again place Cornwall firmly in the national spotlight. I know everyone has been working incredibly hard to ensure the event will be a huge success, and I am looking forward to welcoming everyone to Cornwall.”
