Good Growth boost for 33 town centre and high street projects

Saltash Market Trail

Thirty-three projects in town centres and high streets across Cornwall are the latest to benefit from investment by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth programme.

Grants ranging from £2,500 to £250,000 have been awarded from Cornwall Council’s Town Regeneration and Investment Programme (TRIP) to a wide range of projects aimed at helping towns and their businesses thrive.

Activity includes a mix of improvements to town centres, high streets, public spaces and local facilities, as well as work to develop plans for future projects. The £2.7m TRIP is part of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth programme, funded by the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Cllr Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Investment, said: “This is about giving towns the tools they need to make small changes that have a big impact, and planning for what comes next. It’s great to see communities using Good Growth investment to shape improvements on their own doorsteps to make their town centres busier and more welcoming. Many of these projects are also laying the ground for future improvements so they can unlock further investment.”

Among the projects approved are:

Saltash Market Trail: £3,702

Saltash Town Council will extend the Saltash Market Trail with four additional monthly markets from September to December 2025.

The extended programme aims to test the long-term viability of regular markets as self-sustaining events, supporting local traders and enhancing the vibrancy of Saltash’s high street.

Cllr Rachel Bullock, Mayor of Saltash Town Council, which is working in partnership with Saltash Town team, said: “We’re delighted to be able to continue with the Saltash Street Markets which are taking place on the third Saturday of the month until December, thanks to funding from Cornwall Council’s Town Regeneration and Investment Programme. The markets have been a positive addition to the Saltash community, offering local traders a space to showcase their products and helping drive footfall to the high street, and we hope they can continue long-term.”

St Austell Town Council: £41,512

This project entails small, community-identified improvements across key spots in the town centre. The focus is on enhancing the town’s identity and public spaces, linking heritage, culture, wayfinding, greening and community pride, to support local businesses and help cut anti-social behaviour.

Activity includes tidying up focal points, clearer signs and navigation, and more greenery to soften busy streets and encourage footfall. A feasibility study will also look at design options for Holy Trinity Church so it can play a bigger role in St Austell’s cultural and community life.

Together, these interventions will help revitalise St Austell’s town centre, celebrating its character while laying the groundwork for longer-term regeneration

Redruth Town Centre: £96,240

This project will deliver a series of improvements across Redruth town centre to support local business growth, improve public spaces, and future-proof the town for further developments.

Key upgrades include the installation of town centre Wi-Fi, improvements to Market Way, better lighting, and new projection, audio and CCTV systems. The changes will support events, make the town feel safer and more connected, and improve the overall experience for residents, visitors and investors.

Looe Heritage Trail: £7,875

This project will refresh the town’s heritage trail by funding the creation of a new map along with printed maps and the installation of five new signs. The aim is to help engage more visitors to stay in the town and increase dwell time, which will have a positive impact on local businesses.

All projects are scheduled for completion by early 2026.

The Good Growth programme is managed by Cornwall Council and has been allocated a total of £186 million from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund over four years until March 2026. It is aimed at driving local economic growth, creating jobs and strengthening communities.
